Fauvism
The characteristics of fauvist works were the distortion of the forms and the extrem intensity of their color: pure colors which artists used arbitrarily for emotional and decorative effects. The Fauves first exhibited together in 1905 in Paris. Their name was given during this exhibiton by an art critic who pointed to a renaissance-like sculpture in the middle of the same gallery and exclaimed 'Donatello au milieu des fauves!' (Donatello among the wild beasts!). Fauvism was extremely influential in the evolution of 20th century art, especially in the development of the German expressionism.
